Obama dissed us – May Day rallies missed the mark
Just going over the reports from various rallies around the country. I don’t see the steam being generated that we have seen before. There used to be massive rallies with hundreds of thousands of marchers.
Gloria Estfan drew 50,000 who rallied in Los Angeles. I think even I might go out to see Gloria. I did not even try to see Shakira, who is she anyway?
Organizers in Chicago estimated there were 20,000 although police thought that no, there were 8,000. New York city had an estimated 6500. Dallas had maybe 20,000. Tucson, Arizona had maybe 5,000.
The news media tried to pump up this lame protest by offering various examples of how scared the latino community is. Here is an excerpt of a fellow in Phoenix who they would not identify for reasons that are dlear in his testimony:
“Gerardo, who asked us to conceal his identity, crossed illegally from Mexico to Arizona four years ago. With the new law he knows there’s a greater chance he’ll be arrested and deported…He has a daughter, A STATE JOB, a home which his an American born partner Jessica is packing up, fearing they might have to flee…(probably to another state – Editor) So they joined the protest in Phoenix, fighting to overturn the law. ”
Of course what the illegals are all afraid of is not Arizona, but they are afraid this will spread like wildfire to the other 50 states. The Arizona law has nothing to do with jack booted thugs, it simply enforces the law of the land.
I think that now people are seeing that these protests are being puffed up by the media. The article in Sunday’s Arizona Republic is particularly devoid of details. They say that 75,000 turned out for Cinco de Mayo (the 5th of May.) That is being celebrated over the weekend to maximize sales for local eating and drinking establishments. I support that soberly.
Strangely, I could not find the numbers for the march in Phoenix. Usually those numbers are boldly displayed. Instead, there were a few anecdotes and personal interest items.
What did Obama say?
Obama quipped Saturday night at the White House correspondent’s dinner that “we know what happens in Arizona when you don’t have an ID. … Adios amigos.”
The problem is that is not true.It is a stupid joke repeated by a stupid politician. It does reflect Obama’s feelings about the new Arizona law, but so for he is just taking pot shots at it. The Democrats are not in a position to seriously attack the law.
