A Scott across the bow…
Cleverer people than I came up with the line, “The Scott heard ’round the world…” So I am looking at this as a “Scott across the bow…” to describe Scott Brown’s capturing of the Senate seat previously held by Edward “Ted” Kennedy and Jack Kennedy. The fact that Scott is a Republican makes the feat all the greater.
Even President Obama got up to Massachusetts to campaign for the Democratic candidate, Martha Coakley on Sunday. But nothing could rescue her from her own ineptness or lassitude or whatever the malady. As much as Obama has been a magic man in his first year as President, he might need a little political Viagra to get through the next three years.
Clearly this loss was as much about Obama as it was about the feckless Coakley, who even accused Red Sox World Series hero Curt Schilling of being a Yankees fan. (Not true!) People have apparently wearied of the break-neck speed with which “change” is coming to America through the Senate and the House of Representatives. This may have been a referendum on back room deals and blatant bribery to secure Senator’s votes. Until this election the Democrats had a filibuster-proof 60 vote majority in the Senate.
Now Congressmen will be looking over there shoulders and re-thinking straight party politics. The American people have spoken through the money they donated from all corners of the country to Senator-elect Brown. The Senator has captured a political chess piece, let’s say it was the Rook. The Republicans are about to exchange a Knight for the Democrat’s Queen as the tension grows for the Dems.
It will be very interesting to watch the Democrat congressmen who have been rushing headlong into supporting Obama’s socialist programs as this loss is seen by many as a referendum on those policies. Will this end the Healthcare Bill drama? Or will the Democratic Congress ignore this shot {Scott) across the bow and really anger the public by passing health care.
